How many times have you looked at a situation and thought: “There’s no way. This is impossible.”
Mary had the same thought when Gabriel came to her and said, “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked, “since I am a virgin?”
Mary was young, poor, and female. All the odds said she wouldn’t do anything spiritually significant. And, being pregnant by the Holy Spirit sounded just as impossible then as it does today.
It was hard to believe the prophesied Messiah would be a carpenter’s son and her baby. But Mary’s story doesn’t end in disbelief or disobedience. Mary responded by saying, “I am the Lord’s servant, Let it be to me as you have said” (Luke 1:38).
Mary had confidence in what she couldn’t see. In faith, she obeyed and was part of a miracle. She knew she couldn’t do what Gabriel described, but her God could do anything.
We aren’t strangers to impossible situations. Many of us need Christmas miracles of our own.
God is in the business of making the impossible possible. Gabriel pointed Mary to her cousin Elizabeth’s late-in-life pregnancy as proof. So instead of focusing on your circumstances, follow Mary’s example and fix your eyes on who God is. Nothing is impossible with Him.
