Jim Cain, Senior Minister

South Union Family,

Do you ever wonder about the wonder of God? That’s really not such a bad question when you consider the dictionary’s definition of the word, “wonder”. According to Merriam-Webster, the word, “wonder”, has two primary meanings.  The secondary definition of the word simply means to feel curiosity about something. The primary definition of the word wonder is, to be affected with astonishment, to marvel at, to have a cause of surprise by something strange or not well understood, to be wildly astonished.

Family, I absolutely cannot tell you how many times over the course of my 30 plus years with our church body, the times I have watched both meanings of the word, “wonder”, played out clearly, by the Lord, right here in this church. Why in the world would God call, Jim Cain and his family, to a little bitty church out in the middle of nowhere, they wondered. Well, the Cain family have marveled ever since at the blessing of this place on their lives. Jim Cain is the richest man, partly due to the blessing of this place in and on his life. In other words, we wondered why, and then we were wildly astonished, by God’s wonder.

I know for a fact that you can take out the name, Jim Cain and his family, from that last paragraph, and replace it with countless other names, and still write the same story. Each would wonder why God called them to South Union, out in the middle of nowhere, and like me, they are wildly astonished with the wonder of His answer. The truth is, we have seen God call so many to South Union, that once again, we are running out of room.

So, as we always do, the leadership of this church, called on all the members to pray and fast and begin to wonder what in the world God is going to do, in a big way, with South Union Christian Church. Should we stay? Should we move? Should we build? Those were honest, prayerful questions of wonder from us to God.

Oh my goodness, the secondary definition of the word wonder has already begun to play out again in this place. We are affected with astonishment, we are marveling, we have a cause of great surprise by something strange that we do not really understand.  In short, we are wildly astonished by the gift of 83 acres just given to us in the last few weeks. We are wildly astonished.  We prayed and wondered what God wanted us to do, and He answered our wondering with His wonder.

Believe me, when I tell you, family, we ain’t seen nothing yet.  Listen to the Scripture that the Lord lead, Eric Gilpin, to for this campaign. Habakkuk 1:5 ESV, “Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. In other words, hold onto your hat, South Union Christian Church, you are, once again, about to be wildly astonished by God’s wonder. I can’t wait!

Please continue to pray and join us in this campaign. The Wonder Campaign, on the surface, is about property, a building, and even money, but down deep, it's about the greater opportunity to see many lives restored to God. This is a campaign all about the wonder of Jesus Christ.
I love you all and cannot believe we get to do this again together.

-Jim Cain

P.S. John Blackketter told me that I should remind everyone about the wonder of God that was showcased around here the last time we stepped out in faith and trusted Him with a building.  If you were not around, let me summarize… God showed off!
